About Us
Few of us have the luxury to spend the evening in with a novel. At times it can be hard to choose what's worth spending your time reading and what isn't. Most of us trust the opinions and views of our fellow readers. With Twitter #TwitBookClub will help you find time to read as well as help you narrow down the selection of books you’d like to read. Each monthly meeting will bring forth hours of discussion on current and upcoming reads, recommendations and lots more across a wide variety of genres of books and authors. In addition with the use of the #TwitBookClub hashtag and Twitter, you can stay connected and keep the discussions going beyond the monthly meetings.
How #TwitBookClub came around...
#TwitBookClub came around as an idea based on a bunch of half-serious tweets between the UAE users after an initial question about books and reading was thrown around on Twitter. However, just an idea is not enough to make for a success. Before anybody knew it, the idea had taken on a life of its own and with plenty of potential members, a sponsor and a ’show-runner’ established right away, #TwitBookClub was formed. But, #TwitBookClub is a book club with a difference.
Our Mission:
#TwitBookClub aims to introduce its members to different genres of fiction and non fiction available on the market. Over the months we’ve adopted a motto of “Take what you want, leave the rest behind” when it comes to what the book club is all about. What we do can also be summarized in the words of the Cole Porter song "Anything Goes". We also aim to reach out to children and ensure they get into the habit and enjoy reading throughout their growing lives.
Why Twitter?
Why not? The 140-character limit of the microblogging website allows for quick and convenient communication between members and it makes the process of managing the book club a lot easier. E-mail is too slow a process, phone calls can take up a lot of time and not everyone has the time to join discussion groups/forums, but a lot of people stay in touch via Twitter. The fact that we're open to the whole of the Internet means that you don't have to be on twitter to find out what we're up to.
How do our meetings work?
We meet every 3rd Saturday of the month, from 1100 until 1400. Please be sure to be on time! We start at 11 with Breakfast by WildPeeta then move onto book discussions. We spend about an hour talking about the 4 previously selected books for the current month. Following a short break we discuss and vote on books for upcoming month. You can suggest up to 3 books at a time, and you’ll have about 2 minutes to talk about each book, let people know what the book is about and why they should read it. After all suggestions are made, voting will take place; top 4 will be selected as the next month’s picks. The rest? You can still read them if you want to and you can bring them up again in future meetings.
If you're interested in following/joining our discussions use the #TwitBookClub hashtag in your Tweets to connect to other members. Follow @TwitBookClub for updates relevant to TwitBookClub.
